On Sunday, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United defeated Erik Ten Hag’s team 2-0, and while he didn’t score, Carragher believes the initial goal from Joe Willock was entirely due to him.

The Saint James’ Park boardroom smashed their club-record transfer record to bring the Swedish international to the Premier League from Real Sociedad in the summer.

While the 23-year-old has had injury concerns that have repeatedly interrupted his prospects of establishing some regularity and rhythm, all of that is now being pushed behind him.

And, predictably, he is starting to thrust his chest out and play for a Newcastle squad that is third in the Premier League table – Wayne Rooney revealed who he believes will finish fourth this season.

From his debut against Liverpool at Anfield to his most recent performance, it’s safe to say Isak has a fan in Jamie Carragher, as he revealed on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports (03/04/23 @ 11 p.m.).

“I adore him,” Carragher remarked. “I enjoy watching him play.” Manchester United requires a center-forward and looking at him, I believe he would be an excellent fit for the club. They might have gotten him earlier in the season. When I first saw him at Anfield, I believe it was his debut, he looked fantastic and eclectic.

“Have a look at his physique shape” (when Man United is playing out from the back). ‘Go on, please give that to De Gea,’ he thinks. He does more than just press the goalkeeper. He’s ready to go, he’s out of the blocks, and he’s off. This site (to Varane in a right-sided fullback position) leads to the goal.

“Anybody who tells you that center-forward play is only about scoring goals is living in a fantasy world.” This is what center forwards must accomplish. They must press. They must move quickly. Have energy, score goals, and participate in build-up play.

“I simply love the intensity and aggression on that ball – that touch on the left foot, that touch then on the right foot (in the build-up to Willock’s opening), then to deliver a pass (to Bruno Guimaraes),” he says. That is his responsibility. But the most significant player in the 1-0 win for Newcastle was Isak – I believe Newcastle has a fantastic, extraordinary center-forward.”

Newcastle would have feared losing a player of Isak’s caliber to practically anyone in the Premier League a few years ago, under a different administration.

But that is no longer the case for a team that might say it has been the best in the league this season, trailing only leaders Arsenal and second-placed Manchester City.

That’s what the league standings say, but the performances have probably suggested it as well.

While Manchester United is in need of a center-forward, and there has been speculation of signing Harry Kane, they will not be obtaining one from Newcastle anytime soon because they will remain their rivals for many years to come.
