Marcus Rashford questioned the decision to disallow his goal in Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday evening.

Following Alex Iwobi’s early opener for the home side, teammates Antony and Cristiano Ronaldo — who struck his 700th goal of his professional career — turned the game on its head in the first half.

Rashford felt he had secured the points late in the game. The England international outpaced Everton right-back Seamus Coleman to a loose ball rounded Jordan Pickford and fired into an empty net. Rashford dashed away to celebrate his sixth goal of the season in all competitions, only for VAR to intervene and rule it out for handball.

Although the judgment to rule it out was in accordance with the rules of the game, it was extremely severe and infuriated many United fans. Because of the ambiguity around the handball rule, if Rashford had transferred the ball to a teammate and it was still put into the back of the net, it would have counted.

While Rashford was frustrated that he was denied a third goal in his past two games, he was relieved that United did not lose all three points. Everton applied late pressure, but United held firm.

Rashford wrote on his Twitter page: “@ManUtd, 3 points on the road. VAR was dubious, but it had no effect on the outcome.”
