On Sunday evening, the Red Devils academy graduate scored his 100th goal for the Old Trafford club with an impressive header from Christian Eriksen’s wonderful cross. Rashford’s goal was his eighth of the season in all competitions, an excellent return considering he only scored five times the previous season.

While Rashford’s new achievement is surely noteworthy, the 25-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down and has stated his desire to score even more goals in the future.

To do this, the striker has asked his teammates to be more creative, particularly in the air. Rashford told Sky Sports following the win against West Ham: “Everyone in the midfield tonight [against West Ham] they can cross the ball.” It’s something you almost crave; on this occasion, there was only one, but occasionally there are two or three in the box.

“The most important thing is that I have to be more aggressive, especially when it’s hanging like that and I have a run on the defender.” He won’t defeat me in the air if I jump ahead of him.”

While Rashford has asked for more crosses into the box, Red Devils manager Ten Hag would have to adjust his tactics drastically. United has had some of the lowest crossing numbers in the league since the Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford from Ajax.

Only Crystal Palace has tried fewer attempts than the Red Devils’ 154. Of again, crosses into the box do not always imply a greater attacking threat; Liverpool is an example of this.

Jurgen Klopp’s players have tried 291 crosses in the Premier League this season, scoring fewer goals than the current top four, and they are currently ninth in the rankings after a dismal start to the season with only four victories from 12 matches.

Of course, it has to be seen whether Ten Hag compromises on the playing style he is aiming to implement at Old Trafford in order to maximize Rashford’s effectiveness.

According to the United forward, there is undoubtedly the quality among the current crop of players at Old Trafford to generate a significantly greater threat in the air going forward during the balance of the season as Ten Hag looks to improve on the Red Devils’ wretched sixth-place finish last season.
