The Euro 2020 winner is now Italy’s head coach, but the Azzurri’s World Cup aspirations were dashed in the playoff semi-final when North Macedonia startled Jorginho and his team with a stoppage-time winner. For the first time in their history, Italy will miss two World Cups in a row.

According to multiple sources, its manager, who previously won the Premier League with Manchester City, would stand down from his post with the national side. Despite the fact that Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are leading the race for the vacant managerial role at Old Trafford, Bent has suggested Mancini as a possible option.

“He has shown he can do it in this country, and I believe Premier League experience is crucial,” he told talkSPORT. “He went on to win a major trophy with Italy in the Euros, so his pedigree in terms of winning is undeniable.

“If you’re looking for a winner, I suppose the counterargument is that people will say Jose [Mourinho] was a winner, even though it didn’t end well. Although he won trophies for United, many believe he left the club in a bad situation.

“It would be a major deal for him to go to United after winning Manchester City’s first Premier League title. However, we’ve seen managers do it before.”
