Following last season’s Europa League final, the 31-year-career old’s at Old Trafford appeared to be in a slump. He looks to have found a new lease on life and has since re-established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

De Gea has been one of Manchester United’s standout performers this season. He has repeatedly bailed out the Red Devils and restored his reputation as a dependable last line of defense. These efforts have not gone ignored, and the Red Devils’ hierarchy is eager to recognize them.

Man United is ready to activate De Gea’s 12-month contract extension, ensuring his future at the club until 2024. He will continue to earn roughly £375,000 per week and appears to be set for at least the next two years at the club.

The Red Devils will need to change their approach of paying lesser compensation on short-term contracts to players over the age of 30. De Gea is one of the club’s highest salaries, which, in his defense, is partially deserved given his recent stellar performances.

2024 for De Gea?

Goalkeepers, on the other hand, have a longer shelf life than some outfield players, and de Gea shows no symptoms of slowing down. In fact, he appears to be performing at the same level as he did a few years ago during his prime years at Old Trafford.

This season, the 31-year-old has only kept seven clean sheets in 30 appearances in all competitions. It does not, however, reveal the entire picture and obscures the important role he has played for Manchester United. Indeed, it might be claimed that he has single-handedly kept us in some crucial games, assisting us in our pursuit of a top-four finish.

The news of De Gea’s possible extension should come as a shock to Dean Henderson’s ambitions at the Theatre of Dreams. The Englishman is a step below the Spaniard in the pecking order and has only played in cup competitions this season.

Henderson, at the age of 24, should be getting consistent playing time, which he is unlikely to get at Old Trafford. It remains to be seen if he will stay in place until 2024 to take over the reins or move somewhere in the coming summer.

De Gea’s return is a brief respite for Ralf Rangnick after a rough few weeks at the club. The Spaniard also received the Premier League Player of the Month title for January, demonstrating his impact this season.
