Arsenal want Naby Keita as his contract with Liverpool expires, years after Arsene Wenger tried to lure him to north London.

Liverpool are expected to renew their midfield options in 2023.

Jordan Henderson and Thiago are in their 30s, Fabinho has not been good this season and Arthur Melo’s loan is unlikely to become permanent.

James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are all out of contract this summer and could leave Anfield for free.

ARSENAL WANT NABY KEITA

All three players are bound to have suitors elsewhere and Keita could well find Premier League offers on his agent’s desk.

90Min reports that Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are all keeping an eye on Keita’s situation.

The Guinean could leave for nothing next summer and there have been few signs of a new contract being signed.

Arsenal will be in the market for a midfielder in 2023, but it is difficult to see where Keita fits in.

Would he play high and wide like Granit Xhaka? We’ve never seen him, and we’ve never seen him play wide like Thomas Partey.

Yet Arsenal might think Keita is too good to transfer for free – after Liverpool paid £53m to bring him in from RB Leipzig.

Injuries have held Keita back and a fresh start at Arsenal could be just what he needs.

A move to Arsenal would also be interesting, as they turned down his signature a few years ago.

In 2016, Keita said that Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Southampton had tried to sign him from RB Leipzig.

This was during Arsene Wenger’s time at the club, but Keita felt it was not right for him to join a Premier League giant at just 21.

RB Leipzig won the race and a year later Liverpool agreed a £53m deal with the Bundesliga club.

“Arsenal, Manchester City and Southampton were interested in signing me, and so were Liverpool, although I haven’t spoken to their manager,” Keita said.

“I didn’t want to join a big club in the Champions League straight away. It’s too early for that. I want to test myself in the Bundesliga first,” he added.

Six years later, Arsenal are once again in the hunt for Keita and could complete the deal that Wenger never got to.
