Manchester United beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday night to go back on track.

United’s performance was not very impressive, particularly in the first half, but goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, as well as a red card for Lewis Dunk, helped the home side gain a crucial three points.

After being knocked out of the FA Cup just a few weeks ago, many are wondering what United can do this season.

This was also a question on the minds of MEN Sport’s editors.

Dominic Booth, Rich Fay, and Tyrone Marshall are the hosts of the Manchester is Red podcast. The following is a transcript of their conversation discussing United’s campaign goals.

“If United can finish fourth, that is the best success they can have right now, and results like these will be thrown under the rug.”

“It wasn’t pretty, United weren’t good enough, and you have to ask serious questions both when you win and when you lose.”

“[Tuesday’s result] was basically a relief for most fans.” It wasn’t a flawless performance.”

DB: “I’m not sure how many perfect performances United has had this season.”

“Ty’s Facebook comment about a ‘total lack of urgency and drive to score goals’ showed up on our screen. We’ll be lucky if we stay in fourth place.’

“However, it relates to Richard’s point that no team wants to be in fourth place.”

“How do you think that will play out, and how do you think United can make it their own and go on a run?”

“The problem is that ‘the run’ has been these fixtures,” TM says. Rangnick couldn’t have chosen a better set of 14 games.

“The hardest game he’s played at home was against West Ham, and the second hardest game he’s played away from home was probably against Villa – to have a run of 11 games like that in the Premier League is an absolute dream.”

“United simply hasn’t invested enough in them.”

“It appears that they could have gotten away with it, but that opportunity may have passed them by.”

“They have Leeds and Watford, but their fixture slate in March gets a lot tougher after that.”

“To be honest, calling it a race feels like an insult to racing, but considering the other teams’ form, you’d rather have the points on the board.”

“United are still in a good position, but they have had the opportunity to take it.”

United returns to Premier League play on Sunday when they travel to Leeds.
