The 1-0 defeat against Newcastle, when viewed in isolation, appeared to be a narrow loss against a rival.

However, when considering the broader context, it underscored a recurring pattern of Erik ten Hag’s inability to secure away victories against top-eight teams in the Premier League since his tenure began in the summer of 2022.

As the weekend concluded, Manchester United found themselves in seventh position, reminiscent of their finish in David Moyes’ first season, a period that led to his dismissal—a stark illustration of the perceived cycle of failure haunting the club.

Expressing his frustration in a weekend wrap for Sky Sports, Gary Neville commented, “I’m tired of my own club.”

Neville, addressing Manchester United’s struggles, highlighted his dissatisfaction with the team’s lack of control in the Newcastle match, citing it as a typical away performance against a formidable opponent under Erik ten Hag.

While acknowledging that players share some blame for poor performances, Neville pointed out that past managers have faced similar challenges.

According to Neville, only Louis van Gaal managed to imprint a distinctive style on the team since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

Excuses, Neville argued, are running out for Erik ten Hag, considering the substantial investment and the relative successes achieved by managers elsewhere in the Premier League.

Neville elaborated: “There’s only Louis van Gaal since Sir Alex Ferguson that’s been able to implement a style of play at the club. Every other manager… they’ve all spent £300-400 million quid.”

Drawing comparisons with managers like De Zerbi at Brighton and Postecoglou at Spurs, who achieved remarkable turnarounds in a short period, Neville emphasized the apparent struggle of Manchester United to establish a recognizable pattern of play and repeated combinations.

Expressing his bewilderment, Neville noted the absence of a discernible style of play for Manchester United in the last eight years.

While acknowledging the managerial credentials of those in charge, he questioned why, despite past successes, they seem unable to implement a consistent style at Old Trafford.

Neville conveyed a sense of disillusionment, admitting that, despite his enduring optimism, the current situation makes it difficult for him to stay positive.

He echoed Paul Scholes’ concerns about the midfield’s chaotic performances and expressed reluctance to cover or watch Manchester United’s games, signaling a deep sense of disappointment in the club.
