Manchester United’s hopes for a Carabao Cup rebound were shattered by a ruthless Newcastle side, confirming Gary Neville’s critical pre-match comments on Anthony Martial.

Erik ten Hag’s squad faced Newcastle in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, hoping to secure a place in the last eight following their devastating 3-0 loss to Manchester City.

The Red Devils and their fans were eager for a strong response, but instead, they endured another humiliating 3-0 defeat. Goals from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall, and Joe Willock only deepened the misery at Old Trafford and increased the pressure on Ten Hag.

Before the match, Gary Neville didn’t hold back in his assessment, especially when it came to Anthony Martial.

Neville pondered, “Sometimes I ask myself the question when you walk away from a broadcast like Sunday are we being too harsh? But when you hear that stat there from Andy that a guy that has been at the club nine years, who is meant to be a goalscorer and cost £50/60m has scored 89 goals in nine years and we still can’t get him out the club – I don’t think we’re being harsh, I don’t think we’re being harsh enough.”

He continued, “The failure of the football department and the recruitment is just absolutely incredible.

They are human beings at the end of the day, and I know (Anthony) Martial wants to go out on the pitch and not play badly and achieve their standards and doesn’t want to be injured, and I accept all those factors.”

“But the reality of it is, there is no way that he should still be at Manchester United and leading the line in any competition, even if it is the Carabao Cup – that is where the club is at.”

Neville expressed some sympathy for summer signing Rasmus Hojlund, given the 20-year-old’s limited experience, but he was unapologetic about Martial, who has spent nearly a decade at the club.

Despite Martial’s undeniable talent, Neville’s blunt assessment is accurate. The Frenchman has failed to live up to the high expectations, and he is not a reliable option for Ten Hag when the going gets tough.

In the defeat to Newcastle, Martial was tasked with leading the line for United but managed just one shot on goal before being substituted for Hojlund just after the hour mark.

So far this season, he has only scored one goal across all competitions, and it came in the third round of the League Cup. Remarkably, he hasn’t found the back of the net in the Premier League this season.

The criticism is harsh, but it’s reflective of Martial’s performance and tenure at Manchester United.
