Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United side has been grappling with a challenging start to the season, with a combination of off-field issues and lackluster on-field performances and results.

This setback comes just ahead of United’s Champions League group opener against Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Wan-Bissaka, who had recently been dealing with illness, was unexpectedly named on the bench and sustained the injury shortly after being brought onto the pitch for the final five minutes of the match.

In an official statement, Manchester United confirmed, “Aaron Wan-Bissaka is set for a period on the sidelines after sustaining an injury during the closing stages of Saturday’s game against Brighton and Hove Albion. Further assessment will be needed to determine how long Wan-Bissaka will be out for, but initial indications suggest it will be several weeks.”

According to reports from The Athletic, it’s estimated that the former Crystal Palace defender could be facing a two-month absence, adding his name to the growing list of United players who are unavailable.

This list includes left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, as well as centre-back Raphael Varane. Additionally, Sofyan Amrabat, a deadline-day signing, is yet to make his debut due to a knock.

Mason Mount has been sidelined since sustaining an injury in last month’s defeat to Tottenham. Other absentees include Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo, and Tom Heaton. Jadon Sancho has been excluded from the first team “pending resolution of a squad discipline issue,” while Antony has taken a leave of absence amid assault allegations against him.

With Wan-Bissaka’s injury, Diogo Dalot is now expected to enjoy a consistent run in the Manchester United lineup after temporarily losing his place as Ten Hag’s first-choice right-back, which had been secured through impressive performances under the Dutch manager.
