Gonçalves didn’t live up to expectations in England, but he’s come on strong since then. He scored 23 goals in 32 games last season to help Sporting win the league title.

Sporting was missing Bruno Fernandes’ influence, but they have now found a replacement who could follow in the footsteps of his fellow Portuguese midfielder.

Gonçalves, according to Jornal de Noticias (via Sport Witness), is awaiting offers after an impressive few years at the club. They also claim that Manchester United is one of the clubs that is ‘paying attention to the 23-year-old.

Manchester United may be willing to take a chance on a youngster who has previously failed in England. After the success of the signing of Fernandes, United could make another raid on the Portuguese club.

Despite playing in a position similar to Fernandes, United has little depth in this position, particularly next season. With the contracts of Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard expiring, the club is in need of attacking midfielders.

Gonçalves could serve as a backup to Fernandes, allowing for squad rotation throughout the season.

It’s unclear why Gonçalves didn’t work out at Wolves, where he only made one substitute appearance in a cup game. It took him a year to make his debut before leaving the club a year later.
