Manchester United’s post-Sir Alex Ferguson transfer dealings have been fraught with perplexity.

Angel Di Maria and Alexis Sanchez are two names that come to mind without putting a damper on things.

While those big-money signings failed to live up to the promise and ended up being United disasters, it’s two resurfacing mistakes that have sent a shiver down the spine of a club that has long prided itself on a fantastic academy system.

United have already lost Paul Pogba on a free transfer once, and a decade after his move to Juventus – which Ferguson actually sanctioned – they are facing that danger again, as the World Cup winner continues to garner interest from PSG and other European heavyweights.

Jesse Lingard is expected to join him, barring some late-January activity. Only in that scenario, you’d think it’d be for east London or the northeast, not the Parc des Princes. Of course, depending on how Ralf Rangnick and the permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer navigate the good ship United, Pogba, in particular, could be persuaded to stay.

A turnaround would be good there, but the mistakes have already been done, and it would only cover up the gaps in that regard.

As the clock approaches Monday’s 11 p.m. deadline, the agony, if not outright amusement, of allowing two academy grads to run down their contracts, in one case for the second time, has returned to the fore. However, there are some indications that United has learned from its two egregious mistakes.

If they had been sold in the summer, United could have gotten £50 million in cash for the duo.

Of course, it is a theoretical figure, and, once again, with Pogba, he and his agent Mino Raiola held all the cards. It was in their best interests to refuse prolonged terms in order to keep their choices open. Whatever your thoughts are on Pogba’s second coming, he will be in high demand.

Lingard, too, was in command and, in many ways, short-changed after amassing statistics on loan at West Ham that Cristiano Ronaldo would have been happy to call his own.

Given the inevitable departure that is expected in what should be a summer of transition for United, you can bet that countless fans have already scoured the internet to find out where other players stand with their contracts.

In that regard, there is undisputed evidence that United has learned from Pogba and Lingard’s situations.

Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford, as well as Fred, David de Gea, and returning five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo, are among the first-team players whose contracts expire in 2023. Despite the fact that the players have one-year extension options.

De Gea will be 32 at the time, and Ronaldo will be 38. Fred will have reached the age of 30 as well.

United may see this as an opportunity to cash in on De Gea and Fred, provided they have a succession plan in place. With Ronaldo, who knows? He should still be scoring goals…

Finally, those three players have the choice to prolong. Meanwhile, Shaw and Rashford will be at the pinnacle of their careers, and thus at the pinnacle of transfer worth. For them, it is United who has the ability to trigger their extensions – or cash out before they reach that point. Lessons were learned, but they were not forgotten.
