Anthony Elanga, according to Ralf Rangnick, is a ‘new player’ for Manchester United since his appointment as temporary manager.

Elanga had only played five minutes of first-team football all season and was planning to go on loan in January when Rangnick came in and named him in his first matchday squad against Crystal Palace. Elanga entered the game in the second half and has had a good three months, scoring against Brentford, Leeds, and Atletico Madrid.

Anthony Martial, Amad and Donny van de Beek were all loaned out by United during the winter window, and Elanga’s increased playing time corresponded with their departures.

After the Atletico match, Elanga said that he had studied goalkeeper Jan Oblak’s shooting positioning and had beaten the Slovenian with a first-time finish.

“If you come in the middle of the season as a manager with no pre-season and no effect on new players… We actually lost players and did not add any new ones. Anthony Elanga may be described as a new player because he had already left in his thoughts throughout the winter.

“So it’s not about how far we are from our best possible football; it’s about developing the team and getting the best out of the team, and hopefully, at the conclusion of the season, everyone can look back and say it was a fantastic season for us.”

“A number of players have requested further information about their next opponent, their defenders, or their goalkeepers. If Anthony really did it, it only goes to show what sort of professional and character he is, and he deserves all of the praise.

“However, as I already stated, it is not only about him; it is also about the entire team and their effort in the second half that caused us to transform the game.”
