Due to unidentified injuries, Manchester United goalkeeper Paul Woolston has been forced to retire at the age of 23.

The shot-stopper underwent two surgery for unidentified problems but has yet to regain full fitness.

Woolston joined the Red Devils in 2018 from Newcastle United, where he was a member of the club’s junior academy.

He was capped for England at the Under-18 level and spent time on loan at non-league clubs in the northeast, including Gateshead, Darlington, Blyth Spartans, and South Shields.

“Having to retire at the age of 23 has been incredibly difficult to accept, but I feel a lot more positive now,” Woolston told United’s media team.

“I am extremely pleased of everything I have accomplished; many people aspire to play football at my level.” Of course, I would have preferred to continue my career, but it has been a privilege to represent Manchester United during my time here.

“The love and support of my family, friends, teammates, coaches, medical staff, and the entire Manchester United Academy has been incredible.” Everyone has played an important role in my journey by keeping my spirits high, allowing me to reflect positively on my previous experiences and begin to look forward.

“Right now, I’m completely focused on the next phase of my career.” I am prepared to put all of my knowledge, resilience, passion, and dedication to good use in order to make a real success of my life.”

Woolston has represented England at the Under-18 and Under-17 levels and has competed in the European Under-17 Championship and the Under-17 World Cup.

The Red Devils have announced that they will assist Woolston’s post-playing career with ‘informal and formal education sessions’ as well as assistance with coaching badges.
