Manchester United has struggled this season, but David de Gea’s shot-stopping form has been a highlight for many fans. Many believe that the club would have been in a worse position in the Premier League if the Spanish goalkeeper had not been in net.
But De Gea’s distribution has long been a source of annoyance for United fans, who have seen how his inability to pass out from the back can put the team’s lead in jeopardy. Raphael Varane or Harry Maguire have won possession and played it back to the goalie on numerous times this season, only for him to boot it out of play or back to the opponent, putting United back under siege.
For many fans, determining how awful this was in comparison to other players in Europe’s top five leagues was difficult, but a social media graphic created by Victor Renaud demonstrated where De Gea ranked. And things didn’t appear to be going well for the Spaniard.
The graph (below) indicated where the players ranked in terms of pass completion compared to where they were predicted to rank, revealing that Ederson, Allison, and InSamir Handanovic are the best. De Gea, on the other hand, was at the bottom of the league.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Erik ten Hag has been interviewed for the vacant manager position at United, and his arrival at Old Trafford could signal trouble for De Gea. Ten Hag’s keeper is an important element of the team’s build-up at Ajax, and they rely on strong distribution to accomplish so.
To be the uncontested number one at the club under Ten Hag, De Gea would need to see major improvements in his overall game, since there have already been allegations that his skill set does not suit the modern game. And it appeared that United fans who reacted to Renaud’s image were aware of this. This is what they had to say:
