After failing to push a deal away in January, the 29-year-old is almost certain to quit the club. Over the past two seasons, he has only played in a handful of games for United, starting just one Premier League game.

Lingard has two goals and an assist in 19 appearances for the club, although his time at the club is set to come to an end due to a lack of contract renewal. The England international is still being linked with West Ham and Newcastle.

Lingard’s most recent Instagram post has encouraged United supporters to speculate that a move to San Siro could be on the cards. In Milan, he was seen with Ibrahimovic, who has eight goals for Stefano Pioli’s side this season.

On Instagram and Twitter, United and other club supporters were sarcastically responding to the image, while some speculated that the meeting was a precursor to a summer move to the Italian city…

Italy has been a country that has seen several former United players revitalise their careers after experiencing limited game time at Old Trafford. Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan secured moves to Roma, now managed by former Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho, and both are now first-team regulars.

Fellow England international Fikayo Tomori permanently switched to AC Milan from Chelsea last year after a successful loan spell. These examples could tempt Lingard to make a move abroad if an offer comes in.
