If Frenkie de Jong does not join Manchester United, Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves is a possible replacement. In recent years, Portugal international has been a reliable performer in the Premier League. And, as previously stated, Bruno Fernandes would welcome his compatriot at Old Trafford with open arms.

Manchester United is still hoping to sign De Jong this summer.

They have agreed on a deal of £63 million with Barcelona for the 25-year-old and are willing to offer him a large salary to ensure he moves to the Premier League.

However, the transaction remains in limbo.

De Jong has stated openly that he wishes to remain at Barcelona.

And, with the start of the new season approaching, it’s possible that United will look at other options.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Neves was one of the players on their radar, having long been a target for the Red Devils.

United considered signing the Portugal international last year, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to focus on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Hollywood homecoming instead.

Last year, journalist Dean Jones told The Football Terrace that Fernandes would welcome his countryman’s arrival – and that the club was aware of this.

“Bruno Fernandes certainly wants Neves to join, and the club is aware of that,” he remarked at the time.

Fernandes’ wish was ultimately denied in 2021.

But things could be different this time, especially with United struggling to complete their pursuit of De Jong.

If Neves joins, it’s possible that Ronaldo will be pleased.

The 37-year-future old’s at Old Trafford is still uncertain, with the forward ready to join a Champions League squad.

That is something United cannot offer the veteran after finishing sixth in the league last season under Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

Instead, the relegated Premier League titans will compete in the Europa League.

However, Ronaldo’s mood may be brightened if Neves arrives, as the two have already played together at the international level.

Youri Tielemans of Leicester City is another possible candidate for United.

Previously, the Belgian international was anticipated to join Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal revolution.

He is still at the King Power Stadium, however, and the Gunners look to have other priorities, namely Alexander Zinchenko.

This might provide an opportunity for United to attack.

Only time will tell whether they are able to bring in the crucial midfielder they require.

Kevin Phillips stated earlier this year that the Wolves star was good enough to play for United.

“He’s a good player,” Phillips said to Football Insider.

“He’s one of those guys who is always looking for the ball.” For me, he’s a step above from McTominay and Fred.

“He’s got better distribution, he’s better on the ball – he’s top-notch.” He can also score goals.

“I was sitting on the bench at Molineux when Derby played Wolves, and he scored that magnificent volley.”

“He has grown into a top-tier Premier League player.” It’ll be heartbreaking for the Wolves. He’ll have no trouble breaking into Man United’s midfield – he’s superb.”
