United overcame top-four opponents Tottenham 3-2 at Old Trafford on Saturday, but Arsenal remain one point ahead of Rangnick’s team with three games remaining.

Rashford’s form has been a source of concern throughout the season, and he struggled once more against Spurs, being substituted by United prodigy Anthony Elanga with 25 minutes remaining.

Rashford’s performance astounded ex-West Ham, Norwich City, and Crewe Alexandra striker Ashton, who claimed Rashford was one of three players that United had ‘broken’.

‘Oh, my goodness, Rashford! I know I’ve seen it on TV, but when you see it live, you can’t believe who you’re witnessing,’ says the player. According to Ashton, who spoke on talkSPORT.

‘Shattering confidence, a lack of enthusiasm; this is supposed to be the club he grew up loving.’ He’s intended to represent Manchester United fans and what it means to be a Manchester United player.

‘There simply wasn’t any of that.’ I believe he should be pushed out of the way and removed entirely from the squad. He clearly has a mental problem because he doesn’t appear to be himself.

‘I don’t believe Marcus Rashford should be singled out. A couple of players on that team are utterly messed up. Their self-assurance has been shattered.

‘Harry Maguire is one of them,’ says the narrator. I don’t think he’s a horrible player; in fact, I believe he’s had some outstanding performances. But he’s shattered.

‘He’s under a lot of pressure every week, which is understandable when you’re at a big club, but the constant scrutiny is impacting him.’ He’ll need assistance to reclaim it.

‘Luke Shaw is another one, his self-assurance shattered.’

‘You don’t suddenly become a poor player overnight,’ Ashton remarked. As a player, if you’re not in the appropriate frame of mind and have low self-confidence, you might rapidly appear to be a bad player.

‘However, it can change in the end, and that confidence can be altered… However, at the present, I’d say that quite a few players are performing at levels that they are plainly capable of.’

At Old Trafford, Tottenham were virtually in control, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s magnificent hat-trick propelled Manchester United to victory.

‘There are some people who think Cristiano Ronaldo is a problem for Manchester United, but god knows where they would be without him,’ said Premier League legend Alan Shearer, who told BBC Sport: ‘There are some people who think Cristiano Ronaldo is a problem for Manchester United, but god knows where they would be without him.’

‘I mentioned a few weeks ago that United would be much worse off if it weren’t for Ronaldo, and Saturday’s game against Tottenham summed up why in a nutshell.

‘He was the sole reason they were able to defeat Spurs.’ His hat-trick was incredible, and his total performance was mind-blowing.’

On Tuesday night, Manchester United will host Champions League foes Atletico Madrid at the Theatre of Dreams. The first match ended in a 1-1 tie as Elanga equalized Joao Felix’s early goal.
