Fabrizio Romano reported yesterday that Manchester United want to open direct talks with Barcelona about signing De Jong because they believe there is a chance due to Barcelona’s financial situation, but there have been no updates from the Dutchman’s side, who is said to prefer other options over joining the Premier League side.

Santi Ovalle, a Cadena SER journalist, has stated that if De Jong is forced to leave his current club, the 25-year-old would prefer bypass Erik ten Hag and join Bayern Munich, Manchester City, or Paris Saint-Germain. The Barcelona midfielder is generally known to want to play Champions League football, which regrettably isn’t something United can change right now.

De Jong is one of Barcelona’s most prized assets, but the Catalan club may be obliged to trade him in order to bring in other targets like Robert Lewandowski. According to The Athletic, the La Liga club is seeking for at least €80 million for the midfielder, whose contract expires in Spain in 2026.

De Jong would be an excellent fit for any of the aforementioned clubs, but it is evident that PSG, as well as Man United, require his talents the most, should the former Ajax star agree to transfer to Old Trafford.
