Ten Hag, who has led Ajax since 2017, will take over as United’s fifth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of the season.

The Dutchman replaces Ralf Rangnick, who was appointed as interim manager after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired in November.

Manchester United are presently sixth in the Premier League and have not won a trophy since 2017. Ten Hag is likely to supervise a dramatic overhaul this summer, with some players due to be offloaded and a handful of new recruits pursued.

Tony Cascarino, a former Republic of Ireland and Chelsea striker, has highlighted four prospective targets for Ten Hag, including Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, whom he describes as a “smart signing.”

Zaha spent 18 months at Old Trafford following Ferguson’s departure, but he failed to make an impression and left having played only four games for the Red Devils.

‘Rather than focusing on potential, Erik ten Hag should focus on bringing in players who are already proven this summer,’ Cascarino told The Times, before naming Zaha, Harry Kane, Kalvin Philipps, Yves Bissouma, and Lisandro Martinez as probable United signings this summer.

‘Harry Kane is the clearest example of that — a striker who would be a typical United signing.

‘Signing Kane is contingent on Tottenham Hotspur failing to finish in the top four, but United should make an attempt to sign the England captain.

‘With Erling Haaland obviously on his way to Manchester City, Kane’s alternatives for leaving Tottenham are restricted.

‘Kane has the potential to deliver the kind of lift that Robin van Persie did when he joined United from Arsenal in 2012 and helped them win the Premier League in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season as manager.

‘Other proven top-flight players I would seek are Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips and Brighton’s Yves Bissouma, both of whom could step into United’s midfield.’

‘Wilfried Zaha of Crystal Palace would also be a smart signing for United.

‘I know things didn’t go as planned for him during his first spell at Old Trafford, but he has matured since leaving and has been playing at a high level for years now – he could provide competition for Jadon Sancho and shouldn’t have any issues with Ten Hag’s system because the Dutchman trusts his wingers.’

‘Ten Hag may also consider luring Lisandro Martinez away from Ajax. The Argentina defender is composed on the ball and has been a constant for Ten Hag’s Ajax this season.’

Ten Hag joins Manchester United after winning two Eredivisie titles with Ajax, who are on track to win another this season.
