Carrick, 40, ended his 16-year relationship with the club earlier this month, winning 3-2 against Arsenal in the final game of his caretaker managership.

Following Rangnick’s appointment, it was believed that Carrick, who originally joined United’s coaching staff during Jose Mourinho’s ill-fated tenure at Old Trafford, would remain with the club.

However, after leading the Red Devils to two victories and a draw in his three games in charge, the former England midfielder announced his departure with immediate effect.

“My time at this wonderful club will always rank as the best years of my career,” he stated following the 3-2 triumph over Arsenal in a statement.

“However, after much consideration and analysis, I have come to the conclusion that now is the best time for me to leave the club.” I am, and always will be, a Manchester United supporter who will attend as many games as possible.

“I wish Ralf, the staff, the players, and the supporters nothing but the best in the future, and I look forward to being in the stands and cheering on the boys.”

Rangnick wanted Carrick to stay at Old Trafford, but GQ reports that he had made up his mind and planned to leave United almost immediately.

Staff were ‘gutted’ by the 40-year-departure, old’s according to the source because the former West Ham and Tottenham player was considered as having the passion and determination to become a great coach.

During Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure as manager, he reportedly held regular team meetings and served as a vital link between the players and the coaching staff.

Despite his decision to depart in the wake of Rangnick’s appointment earlier this month, Carrick is still held in high regard by many at the club.

Former United player Paul Ince told the Mirror that Carrick was sensible to leave his options open, whether it meant reuniting with Solskjaer in the future or taking a go at management for the first time.

“You suppose Solskjaer will want to get back on the horse at some point, whether in the Championship or in another country,” he continued. If that’s the case, Carrick can rejoin Ole as his No. 2 again.

“However, he might have developed a liking for it” (management). In those three games, he performed admirably. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, but they were three crucial games. Villarreal, which they needed to win, a draw with Chelsea, and a victory over Arsenal.

“Those are three extremely difficult games.”
