Man Utd should STRIP Harry Maguire of captaincy and give it to the one player everyone respects claims Paul Parker
As the Red Devils strive to finish in the top four, the centre-back has been heavily criticized for his performances this season.
Maguire is said to be in a power battle with striker Cristiano Ronaldo for the captaincy, according to reports.
Parker has now spoken in, stating that interim manager Ralf Rangnick should hand over the armband to someone “who they all respect.”
“I don’t think Harry Maguire should be captain of Manchester United,” he told BetfredTV.
“He’s had far more important things to worry about in his own game than trying to lead a squad he’d only recently joined and given the skipper in a matter of seconds.”
“I believe that was more about his price tag than about him as a person, as a man leader.”
“At the moment, I believe David De Gea should be captain because he is the one they all respect.” Because being a captain necessitates a player’s respect.
“De Gea has to be the most respected player on that United club because he’s the one who’s kept them in fourth place in the league right now.”
Maguire joined United from Leicester in 2019 for £85 million, making him the most expensive defender in the world.
Soon after, he was elected club captain by then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
However, after a great European Championships with England last summer, his form has plummeted this season.
Parker believes it’s past time for United to give other defenders a shot in the backline.
“Maguire would not be in my first choice back four because he is out of form,” he continued.
“You’ve got Phil Jones, who did pretty well in his first game and was a little sad afterward because you watched everything that happened.
“I’d want to see Lindelof come back in because I believe there are people looking at him today who have made erroneous judgments about him.”
