Marcus Rashford has been in excellent form for the Red Devils since Ten Hag took over, but United still lack the genuine No.9 required to re-establish themselves as title challengers.

The Dutchman will have funds available in the summer to address that issue, with Tottenham talisman Harry Kane said to be United’s primary target. Ten Hag, on the other hand, has been scouting other prospective targets in case a deal for Kane cannot be reached.

Former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham is one name being considered if a bid for Kane fails to materialize, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. According to the Italian newspaper, United scouts studied the 25-year-old during the weekend, when he scored in AS Roma’s 1-1 draw with AC Milan.

Since leaving Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2021, Abraham has been linked with a move to the Premier League on multiple occasions.

Ten Hag’s chances of bringing Abraham back to England may be limited by the £67 million repurchase option added by Chelsea in the initial transaction that brought the striker to Rome. The provision would give the Blues first refusal on their academy graduate if he should leave Roma this summer, with the Italian club required to inform the Londoners of any bids that arrive.

Although Kane is understandably Manchester United’s top priority, a deal with Spurs owner Daniel Levy – a notoriously difficult negotiator – is unlikely to be easy.

Ten Hag has revealed that finding a new front is his primary objective for the summer amid a lack of conventional central strikers during the season. “It’s no secret that we had a shortage of No.9s throughout the season,” remarked United’s manager.

“First, we had [Cristiano] Ronaldo’s withdrawal, then Antony Martial was frequently unavailable, Jadon Sancho was frequently unavailable, and you have a shortage of frontline players.”

“With fewer players, we have to cover more games, so we definitely need frontline players to help strengthen the squad.” There are numerous approaches to this. Rashford, the conventional No. 9, can also play very well as a No. 9, and Anthony Martial is an excellent No. 9.

“We have players who can fill that role, but we definitely need some offensive players who have a big impact, who are quality players who help the frontline.”
