‘I’d hang my boots up’… ESPN pundit says Man Utd star should consider quitting after Newcastle fight

In the recent defeat to Newcastle, Manchester United’s choice of Luke Shaw at center-back was a strategic decision to manage workload rather than a reflection on the center-backs’ performance.

However, this move dealt a significant blow to another player – Raphael Varane.

Manager Erik ten Hag opted for Shaw at center-back to avoid overexerting him with a third consecutive start at left-back in a week.

Despite Shaw’s selection, Varane, who has not started a match since October 24, finds himself low in the pecking order, trailing behind Maguire, Lindelof, Evans, and Martinez when fit.

Pundits, including Craig Burley, see this decision as a clear signal that Varane should consider a move.

Burley suggested, “If I was Raphael Varane, I’d call it quits. I’d hang my boots up because if I can’t get in this United side, I might as well retire.”

There has been speculation about interest from Saudi Pro League teams, and Burley emphasized that a move might be in Varane’s best interest, potentially equating the league to a semi-retirement scenario.

On a positive note, Varane can draw inspiration from Harry Maguire, who turned around a similar situation last season and regained favor from the manager.

However, Ten Hag seems firm on the idea that Maguire and Varane cannot play together.

While Shaw and Maguire received praise as United’s standout performers against Newcastle, Varane’s immediate rise up the pecking order seems unlikely.

Burley also reserved criticism for forwards Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, highlighting their lackluster displays and questioning their contribution.
