Injury Update – Manchester United coach provides new Anthony’s return date after securing injury vs Everton

MARTIAL INJURY TO BE ASSESSED

Although Manchester United’s away triumphed over Everton on Sunday was overwhelmingly uplifting, the joy was slightly dampened by the sight of in-form attacker Anthony Martial being replaced after only 29 minutes.

The Frenchman started at Goodison Park and was looking to score for the third time in a straight, following his double against Manchester City and strike away to Omonia Nicosia, but an injury pulled our number nine off.

Cristiano Ronaldo came on in place of Martial, and his historic goal shortly before halftime – the 700th of his club career – proved to be the game-winner.

Erik ten Hag was queried about Anthony’s condition following his first-half withdrawal at his post-match press conference.

“I’ll have to see,” stated United’s manager. “I have no idea what it is or how bad it is.”

“Let’s wait the first 24 hours to see how serious it is, then I’ll respond.”

In an interview with BT Sport, the Dutchman stated that the injury suffered by Martial was not a recurrence of the ailment that kept him out for several weeks at the start of the season.

“No, I don’t think so [it’s a reoccurring problem],” he replied. “It’s something unique. He was suffering from a back ailment.”

Despite playing only 29 minutes, the Frenchman was instrumental in getting the Reds level following Alex Iwobi’s opener, placing the ball into the path of Antony in a spectacular counterattack.

“He was vital,” Ten Hag said of Martial’s impact on the 2-1 victory. “[He] helped the goal with Antony, so [I’m] pleased.”

With the Reds hosting Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League again on Thursday and then hosting Newcastle United three days later, fans will be hoping for a positive report on Martial’s fitness.
