Man Utd keeper latest: Ten Hag eyes two De Gea successors but twist in saga could see shock U-turn

The future of David De Gea at Manchester United is far from certain, with insiders telling TEAMtalk that the Spaniard's stay at Old Trafford beyond this season is still a strong possibility.

The veteran has proven to be one of United’s most successful signings in a generation. The 45-times capped Spain player cost a cheap £18.9m in 2011 and has gone on to make over 500 appearances for the Red Devils.

Unfortunately, he does not appear on this list of all Manchester United signings since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

Indeed, he has four times been voted the club’s Player of the Year, most recently in the 2021/22 season. De Gea, who is in his 12th season with the Red Devils, is the club’s second-highest earner, earning an estimated £350,000 each week.

That agreement, though, is set to expire at the end of the season. While United has the option to extend his stay by a year, substantial uncertainties about his future remain.

Indeed, there are clear indications that De Gea does not entirely fit Ten Hag’s playing style. In order to beat the high press, the Dutchman has frequently played with keepers who are comfortable with the ball at their feet.

De Gea himself would undoubtedly acknowledge that this is not his strongest suit.

As a result, he has been widely linked with a return to Spain, with Italian powerhouse Juventus also apparently interested.

Furthermore, United is looking for potential successors. To that aim, Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa is said to be on their radar, with Fabrizio Romano providing an update on Wednesday.

David De Gea’s future at Manchester United is far from certain.
TEAMtalk can tell, however, that rather than having already decided to let De Gea go, Ten Hag is still very much open to him staying.

Indeed, transfer expert Graeme Bailey has detailed the elements that could lead to De Gea signing a new contract.

“When it comes to their goalie issue, Manchester United have a significant decision to make,” Bailey told TEAMtalk. “Erik Ten Hag admires De Gea not only as a player but also as a person.” And I’m told he has no reservations about extending his stay.

“However, there are a handful of conditions that must be met before that may happen.”

“De Gea has a one-year option, but United would prefer not to use it unless he wants to stay.” And, if he does [remain], they would prefer to negotiate a new contract. However, in order for that to happen, he would have to accept a pay cut. That cannot be ruled out at this time.”

When asked about potential replacements, Bailey stated that the team is looking into the second possibility in addition to Costa.

“United scouts are doing their homework, and Diogo Costa of Porto has emerged as a viable candidate.” They really like him. And if De Gea does leave, he may be the man they turn to.

“They have also long admired Jan Oblak. He could still be an option because he is likely to be available, but he would be somewhat expensive.”
