Last summer, Manchester United reportedly turned down Sir Alex Ferguson’s suggestion to sign Peterborough midfielder Ronnie Edwards.

The Red Devils revealed last week that Erik ten Hag will take over as club manager at the end of the season, and the current Ajax manager appears to have a big job ahead of him. United has had numerous issues this season, and the summer will almost probably include a roster revamp as many of the club’s poor crop is culled.

Posh defender Edwards, a teenage talent earmarked for greatness by Ferguson, has already emerged as one rising star that United lost out on last summer. The legendary Scot reportedly recommended the England Under-19 international to United, but the Red Devils allegedly snubbed his transfer advice.

According to The Sun, United did not take their ex-advice manager’s and signed the promising adolescent. Ferguson’s past employers may live to regret their failure to make a play for the highly regarded defender.

Three Bundesliga players RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Borussia Dortmund are thought to be leading the battle for Edwards, who may become the latest English prodigy to play abroad. If the Posh prodigy decides to leave the club and move to Germany, he will be following in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham.

Both Crystal Palace and Tottenham are rumored to be interested in Edwards, who has played 36 Championship games for Posh this season, starting 29 of them. It has also been alleged that 98 scouts attended one of the defender’s England U19 matches, with many of them there to examine Edwards in particular.

The England superstar not only has a great reputation, but also a big price tag. Despite Posh’s impending relegation to League One, it is expected that a fee of between £15 million and £20 million will be required to entice the defender away from the club.

Peterborough’s Director of Football Barry Fry recently issued a hands-off warning over Edwards, saying that a club-record amount would be required to sign the teenager, one that would exceed the £10m Brentford paid Posh for Ivan Toney in 2020. “That record would be smashed if we sold Ronnie,” Fry told the Peterborough Telegraph.

“There was a lot of interest in him before he started playing regularly in the Championship, and that attention will only grow when he plays for England this summer…” If he were to depart, he should preferably go and be leased back to us for a year.”
