Paul Pogba facing huge pay cut to leave Man Utd as Juventus set maximum wage

If Paul Pogba leaves Manchester United for Juventus this summer, his salary would plummet, according to reports in Italy, who claim the Serie A club has set a maximum wage for the Frenchman.

After leaving Man United for the first time as a teenager, the 29-year-old spent four brilliant years at Juve, winning the Scudetto in each of his seasons with the club. And now, after failing to win a single league trophy since coming to Old Trafford, he has no plans to leave.

Other Premier League clubs, as well as Juventus, have expressed interest in Pogba, while Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have also been discussed in connection with the World Cup champion. The midfielder’s lucrative United contract is unlikely to be matched in Turin.

Despite the fact that Pogba will not be paid a transfer price, Juventus will not be able to pay him more than €10 million (£8.5 million) each year in salaries, according to Calciomercato (via Football Italia). That works out to just over £160,000 per week, a big reduction from the £290,000 per week the France international is said to be earning at Old Trafford.

The stated maximum is consistent with what Juve was apparently willing to provide Paulo Dybala in order to keep him at the Allianz Stadium. Following the breakdown of talks, former Palermo attacker Dybala is poised to depart Turin on a free transfer at the end of the current season.

Dybala and Pogba had only played together at Juventus for one season, in the 2015-16 season. As Juve won the league and the Coppa Italia that season, the forward led the league with 19 goals, with Pogba adding eight of his own.

When asked about his future plans during the international break, Pogba told Telefoot, “Nothing is determined on my future, nothing is done.” On Friday, he began for France in a friendly win over Cote d’Ivoire, and on Tuesday, he came off the bench in a win against South Africa.

“I can make a decision tomorrow, just as I can make a decision during the transfer window,” he added. “I want to return and finish the season strong.” The season isn’t quite ended yet, but it’s getting close because we don’t have any more championships to contend for.

“I want to win titles and play for a championship, and we haven’t won one this year or in the last few years.” It’s a pity.”

Pogba has yet to win another trophy after winning the League Cup and Europa League in his first season back at Manchester United. During his six seasons at United, the club has never placed better than second in the Premier League, and he might leave with another finish outside the top four.
