United easily defeated Old Trafford 4-1 to earn a spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season. In sharp contrast, Chelsea’s defeat left them with just 43 points from 37 games, placing them in 12th position in the Premier League.

The Blues had opportunities to defeat Erik Ten Hag’s team, but they chose not to take advantage of them, and they paid for it at the other end. After Mykhaylo Mudryk and Conor Gallagher missed excellent scoring opportunities, United went into halftime with a 2-0 lead thanks to Casemiro’s free header and Anthony Martial’s tap-in.

After being fouled by Wesley Fofana, Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty, and Marcus Rashford capitalized on another error by Kepa Arrizabalaga to make it 4-0. Even though Joao Felix scored a consolation goal on the counterattack with a fantastic finish, the outcome of the game was largely unaffected.

“It’s a simple thing to say, but any team that wins in the Premier League has them as a base because without them the tactics do not matter,” Lampard said to Sky Sports. “Training hard every day, attempting to get better, and working as a true team.

“There are some unknowns for the players; everyone talks about the large squad; and I realize that this year at the club is difficult for the coaches; I understand this because I have experienced it for the past nine league games.

As a player, you must ignore this and concentrate on your own performance even though you may occasionally claim that this is a factor or, if you prefer, an excuse. Since joining, I’ve soon realized that some of the collective standards – and it’s up to the individuals inside that to realize who they are – are not a blanket; rather, we only need to identify the several factors that have contributed to the club’s current status.

“It’s not only pointing the finger at the players because there was no shortage of effort this evening; rather, you earn the credit via your preparation and training as well as your resilience.

“I had the good fortune to play here for a number of years, and you can tell by looking at the team and the person next to you that he’s worked on his standards and that everything is in place to rely on one another.

The key thing is to figure out how it improves. “It’s a horrible year for the club, and many clubs have these years when we’ve had enormous success for the last 20 years or whatever.

“It needs to be rebooted, the team will change in the summer in terms of how it looks, and as a Chelsea player, everything has to be improved to get to the level,” he said.

The match against Newcastle on Sunday will be Lampard’s last as Chelsea’s interim manager until Mauricio Pochettino takes over in the summer.
