Man Utd could sign ‘world class’ Bayern Munich star perfect for rebuild below £63m value

Manchester United could do far worse than raid Bayern Munich in the summer for one of their most visible offensive stars as part of a large-scale rebuilding effort ahead of next season. The Red Devils appear to be driven into the transfer market to strengthen their ranks between now and the following season, with a number of their current choices unlikely to be involved at Old Trafford in the long run.

Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard are both set to leave Manchester United at the end of the season after failing to extend their existing contracts.

The former has been plagued by injuries since the start of the season and has apparently been declared surplus to requirements ahead of the summer months.

Meanwhile, Lingard has no plans to stay at United after Ralf Rangnick restricted his involvement despite a good loan spell at West Ham last year.

Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial are both expected to leave the club at the conclusion of the season, while Mason Greenwood is currently unavailable for selection and will be for the foreseeable future.

This might leave Manchester United with just a few senior attacking alternatives, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Anthony Elanga.

The signing of a new forward appears to be on the horizon at Old Trafford, with Bayern Munich perhaps ready to provide United a low-cost answer ahead of the new season.

Serge Gnabry, whose current contract at the Allianz Arena expires at the end of next season, might emerge as a realistic possibility for the Red Devils in the coming months.

Bayern Munich is thought to be interested in extending the former Arsenal winger’s contract but has yet to reach an agreement with his representatives.

If United decides to move on their alleged interest in his talents, the situation may allow them to coax the Bundesliga heavyweights into selling up with a reasonable deal in the summer.

According to Sky Germany, United is one of several clubs interested in signing Gnabry and has been following his progress at Bayern in recent months.

Transfermarkt values him at £63 million, but the uncertainty surrounding his future could make his current employers prepared to hear lower-ball offers in the near future.

Although the 26-year-old was previously unable to break into the Premier League with Arsenal, he is now a different beast and would undoubtedly represent a significant coup for United if he can be signed when the bidding opens in the summer.

Gnabry has previously been lauded by none other than Rio Ferdinand, who sang poetic about the forward after he assisted Bayern Munich in reaching the Champions League final in 2020.

“His stats are incredible; he’s at the highest level, world-class,” Ferdinand said to BT Sport.

“He’s arrived in Germany and has lit the room on fire; he was simply fantastic tonight. His decision-making abilities have been exceptional.

“I’d even go so far as to say he’s one of the most improved players in football right now. I don’t believe anyone else’s rising trajectory is as pronounced as his.

“From being dropped by Arsenal and West Brom to where he is now, he has come a long way. Wow.”

It remains to be seen whether United will eventually target Gnabry in the summer in order to bolster their attacking ranks with a sprinkling of proven skill.

Whatever happens, the Red Devils will need to move quickly and decisively in the forthcoming transfer window if they are to avoid being short of choices at the top of the pitch next season.
