Manchester United will be without suspended center-back Lisandro Martinez when the Europa League season resumes next year.

The Argentine, who joined the club from Ajax during the summer transfer window, was booked in the second half of Thursday night’s Europa League match against Real Sociedad in Spain. He was penalized for leaping into a challenge on striker Carlos Fernandez, which appeared harsh on second viewing.

Nonetheless, Martinez was injured and required treatment from the United medical team. He was able to continue, however.

Unfortunately for him and United, this means he will be suspended when the Reds return to the Europa League next season, as it was his third yellow card in the competition this season, resulting in a one-match ban. The Argentine was also booked in the rematch against Sociedad at Old Trafford in September, as well as in the 3-2 win against Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus last month.

Martinez, who was a priority target for United boss Erik ten Hag during the summer transfer window, has started all but one of the Reds’ six Europa League group games this season, emphasizing his significance.

United triumphed 1-0 in Spain on Thursday night, but the victory was insufficient to propel them to the top of Group E, meaning they will need to compete in a two-leg play-off against a third-placed Champions League team to advance to the last 16.
