Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils’ new manager, was revealed on Thursday. He will leave Ajax at the end of the season and join Manchester United.
The Dutchman, interestingly, was a target for Newcastle. They were even rumored to be willing to offer him one of the most paid managers in the Premier League.
Ten Hag, on the other hand, stayed at Ajax and will now be the future manager of Manchester United. And he’ll be joined by a name that sends shivers down Toon fans’ spines.
Erik ten Hag’s assistant will be Steve McClaren.
McClaren will be one of Ten Hag’s assistants at Old Trafford, according to the Telegraph. McClaren is no stranger to the post, having previously served as Sir Alex Ferguson’s right-hand man.
McClaren is familiar with Ten Hag, having worked with him in the Netherlands during his tenure as Twente’s manager.
It will be the 60-year-first old’s Premier League job since being fired by Newcastle in 2016. Interestingly, McClaren’s final defeat at St James’ Park came against Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth.
McClaren was a colossal failure for the Magpies. In the summer of 2015, he brought in some decent players, but they didn’t gel. By the time he was fired in March 2016, Newcastle was on the verge of relegation. Rafa Benitez was unable to inspire a survival mission, and they were relegated at the end of that season.
The Steve McClaren period at St James’ Park is not remembered fondly. The tuxedo of Florian Thauvin and Gini Wijnaldum’s inability to shine away from home stands out.
McClaren’s side has lost a number of key players. There are just four players: Jamaal Lascelles, Karl Darlow, Jonjo Shelvey, and Paul Dummett.
Since the ‘wolly with a brolly’ was freed of his responsibilities at St James’ Park, a lot has changed. But he’ll be back next season, as Ten Hag’s Manchester United visits the North East and he’ll be in the away dugout.
