The new manager faces a difficult task as Manchester United attempts to return from one of its worst seasons in recent memory.
Erik ten Hag has been warned that when he arrives from Ajax this summer, he must address five issues at Manchester United.
Brighton and Hove Albion humiliated United at the Amex Stadium over the weekend, giving United fans yet another nightmare. Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross, and Leandro Trossard all scored in the home team’s overwhelming victory.
United’s defeat in Sussex means they will not qualify for the Champions League next season, and they now face a battle to qualify for the Europa League, with West Ham expected to leapfrog them if they win their game in hand. Ten Hag would have seen the magnitude of the work ahead of him if he had been watching.
According to Match of the Day expert Danny Murphy, the Dutchman must do five things to change the tide at Old Trafford. Murphy told The Punters Page, “He has to work incredibly hard on his ideas and techniques.”
“He has to attempt to get the players on board and work on their conditioning because they need to be stronger and sharper all over the field.” There’s a lot of talent on the team, and I’m sure he’ll make a few good additions as well.
” He also needs to develop an identity or a style of play because there isn’t one right now.” They don’t have a lot of possession and aren’t a good counter-attacking team, so it’s difficult to tell what they are right now.
“They only rely on individual quality on occasion, primarily Cristiano Ronaldo, therefore they need to reclaim their identity.” Ten Hag requires a method of play that he can rely on.
“If he needs to bring in players over the next year to 18 months, that’s OK, but that’s how they have to play.” If they’re going to be possession-based, he’ll need to see who agrees, and if they don’t, he’ll need to change tactics.
“The players’ health and mentality must improve in order for the hunger and physicality to return.”
