United return to Premier League action this weekend as they entertain Leicester City at Old Trafford as part of their bid for a top-four finish. However, they may have to do so without their talisman at first.

Ronaldo was not among the 21 players who arrived at the Lowry on Friday night for the game. During the international break, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner played 180 minutes for Portugal, helping his team qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

While international team-mates Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot have returned to United, Ronaldo is yet to make an appearance.

During his pre-match press conference, Ralf Rangnick made no mention of an injury, despite the fact that Edinson Cavani was expected to miss another game.

However, if Ronaldo is also ruled out, the interim manager would have to make a huge decision about who will lead his assault against Leicester. Marcus Rashford has played as a striker before, while Fernandes played as a false nine in United’s 4-1 loss to Manchester City, and United supporters have shown their preference.

If Fernandes on the field against Leicester, he’ll be looking to finish off an impressive week. On Tuesday, the 27-year-old scored both goals as Portugal qualified for the World Cup against North Macedonia, before signing a new contract at Old Trafford.

The new deal will keep him with the Reds until 2026, with an option for another year. As United look to close the four-point deficit on fourth-placed Arsenal, Fernandes will be hoping for a favourable omen.
