Two more former Ole Gunnar Solskjaer coaches are expected to quit after Michael Carrick decided to stand down as first team coach after his caretaker manager tenure expired.

According to the Training Ground Guru Kieran McKenna and Martyn Pert have both left for Ipswich Town after saying their goodbyes.

Pert is departing to serve as McKenna’s assistant at Ipswich, and McKenna is likely to take over as manager.

According to the Telegraph, Ralf Rangnick would love McKenna to stay since they ‘get along well together,’ but he understands his desire to take on a managerial role for the first time.

“I would want to thank Ralf Rangnick,” McKenna said on United’s website. “I have truly liked the brief time I have worked with him and I really appreciate his patience during this process.”

Cleaning house in terms of coaching is undoubtedly a good idea for United, however, it happens. The fact that Solskjaer’s assistants did not accompany him when he was fired was a bit of a surprise.

Only Mike Phelan remains, and it appears that he will not be back next season. Rangnick looks to have reduced Phelan’s influence, though this could alter now that McKenna has left.

McKenna’s departure leaves a void, for better or worse, because he was heavily involved in the coaching. The Telegraph recently published a profile piece on him, examining his promising coaching resume and questioning whether Solskjaer had just asked him to do too much, given his inexperience and the nature of the job.

“Kieran is a tremendously gifted coach who has been a real benefit to the club during his time here,” United director of football John Murtough said of McKenna and Pert’s departures.

“Now he has the opportunity to carve out his own path as a manager, and everyone at Manchester United wishes him well.”

Chris Armas, who formerly worked with Rangnick, has joined United’s coaching staff, as has Sascha Lense, who has joined as a psychologist. The exits of McKenna and Pert leave vacancies that United are likely to strive to fill. This will be a smart move, as the German coach will be able to bring in anybody he wants rather than settling for who he found.
