Following his treatment by FC Barcelona in recent weeks, Frenkie de Jong has confessed that he may be ready to join Manchester United.

The two clubs agreed on an €85 million ($87 million) transfer fee in July, but De Jong declined to switch allegiances, citing United’s lack of Champions League football and a desire to flourish at Camp Nou under Xavi Hernandez as his key motivations.

However, it has been suggested elsewhere that a dispute over deferred pay was another reason for De Jong’s stance, and Barcelona’s behavior in the matter has apparently irritated the Dutchman to the point where he is now considering a move to Old Trafford.

De Jong is due to earn €18mn ($18.4mn) next season and then €88.58mn ($90.2mn) during the final four years of his deal, which expires in mid-2026, after agreeing to a contract extension and salary deferral in October 2020.

However, it was reported on Monday how Barca notified De Jong and his camp that the arrangement struck under the supervision of current president Joan Laporta’s predecessor Josep Bartomeu had allegedly brought up evidence of illegal behavior, leaving everybody concerned susceptible to judicial actions.

Barcelona wants the current contract to be terminated and De Jong, along with three other players who signed similar accords in Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Gerard Pique, and Clement Lenglet, to return to their previous arrangements.

With De Jong also being verbally abused outside Barcelona’s training ground on Wednesday by fans telling him to accept the 50% pay cut that Laporta wants him to take in order to stay, and which a family source told Mundo Deportivo this week said the player has “o.oo%” intention of doing, tensions between the two parties are reaching boiling point.

According to the same publication, De Jong believes Barcelona is conducting a media smear campaign against him. On Saturday, rival daily SPORT said that De Jong had finally confided to his teammates in the locker room that he might join Manchester United after all.

De Jong is now “more open to change” than he previously stated, and he is also “extremely upset” with Barcelona, whom he believes is forcing him to go.

Xavi revealed on Friday, ahead of Saturday’s La Liga opener against Rayo Vallecano, that he doesn’t “know what will happen between now and 31 August,” when the transfer market shuts for De Jong’s future.

The newest revelation should also alert United’s rivals, Chelsea, with sources claiming that the west Londoners are ready to match United’s offer for the former Ajax star.
