Gill, serving as chief executive for a successful decade, had been a crucial figure alongside Ferguson, contributing to recruitment and overseeing squad transformations.

Despite the void left by Gill’s departure, Ferguson respected his decision, believing it signaled a heartfelt desire for the club to progress.

Reflecting on his 16 years of service to United, Gill acknowledged the privilege of being a temporary custodian of the institution.

He emphasized the need for businesses to embrace new management and ideas, deeming it appropriate for someone new to take the helm after his decade in charge.

Ferguson retired in the same summer, and the responsibility passed to Ed Woodward, overseeing a decade marked by failure with only three trophies won before his departure in January 2022.

Richard Arnold, a fellow Bristol University graduate and friend of Woodward, assumed a challenging role but faced criticism, particularly regarding the Mason Greenwood situation in August.

With the imminent investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Arnold decided to step down, making way for potential successor Jean-Claude Blanc. Blanc, with previous roles as CEO at Juventus and a senior position at Paris Saint-Germain, is seen as a fitting candidate.

The hope is that under INEOS ownership, decisions like the European Super League controversy and the Greenwood incident won’t recur.

A new sporting director is anticipated, with names like Dan Ashworth, Paul Mitchell, and Michael Edwards being considered.

As the era of Glazer acolytes running the club nears its end, there is optimism for a positive shift in leadership under Ratcliffe, emphasizing the need for top-notch individuals in the boardroom for sustained success.
