  • Dutch striker targeted by all-time great Manchester United teammate sees the funny side
  • WHAT OCCURED? During the January transfer window, the Netherlands international striker joined to Old

Trafford on loan from Burnley. Weghorst arrived in Manchester fresh off a World Cup appearance for his country in which he faced Messi and Argentina in the quarterfinals. A ferocious match produced numerous cards and heated exchanges on and off the field.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Messi was famously captured on tape singling out Weghorst during a post-match interview in a crowded tunnel, saying: “Que miras bobo. “Anda palla,” which means “What are you looking at, idiot?”

ADDITIONALLY, the remark is claimed to have amused Argentina international defender Martinez, who has started to referring to Weghorst as “Bobo” after reuniting with the Dutch frontman in England.

WHAT COMES NEXT? Weghorst is claimed to have laughed off his new moniker and has previously stated about incurring the wrath of an all-time great: “I fought against Messi and there were a few moments between us. I believe he disliked it and was astonished by it. But I have a lot of admiration for him. He is regarded as one of the finest of all time. I wanted to express my admiration for Messi after the game, but he refused. I believe he was still upset with me. Oh well, I consider it a great compliment that he now knows my name. At the very least, I did something right.”
