Jamie Carragher has outlined why he believes Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi would not be able to win the Champions League with their respective clubs.

Ronaldo had a key role in United’s qualification for the knockout stages of the competition, scoring in all five of his group matches.

Ronaldo scored a handful of game-winning goals to guarantee his team avoided an embarrassing early departure from the competition.

Despite Kylian Mbappe giving Paris Saint-Germain the advantage against Real Madrid on Tuesday, Carragher believes neither Messi nor Ronaldo will be crowned European champions this season.

“Last night, we were discussing Real Madrid and if they could really play like that away at PSG – I just think that’s the way the game is now, and you have to perform like that.” On CBS Sports’ Golazo, Carragher noted, “It has to be great energy.”

“That’s why I’ve considered signing Cristiano Ronaldo for United or Lionel Messi for PSG at times this season.”

“They’re two of the best players I’ve probably ever seen, but I don’t think you can carry players and say they’re not going to work hard or push off the ball if you want to win the big trophies.”

When Ronaldo returns to Madrid next Wednesday to play Diego Simeone’s Atletico, he will be eager to silence his critics.
