Manchester United is in a predicament. Anthony Martial has been in excellent form when he has played this season, scoring three goals and collecting two assists in 133 minutes, but injury troubles have limited his appearances, and he suffered another setback against Everton at the weekend.

Cristiano Ronaldo is United’s other option, and he impressed as a substitute against Everton, scoring the team’s winner as well as his 700th goal in club football. However, that was only his second goal of the season, and if he doesn’t recover his scoring touch, it’s apparent that the squad will suffer in the future.

Ronaldo’s future at Manchester United is also unknown when the January transfer window closes. United and Erik ten Hag will have to weigh their options after the World Cup.

Cody Gakpo is one option United may consider. The Dutch forward was extensively linked with a move to Manchester City during the summer transfer window, but the deal fell through.

This season, Gakpo has been a force in both the Eredivisie and the Europa League. The 23-year-old has nine goals and three assists in nine league games, as well as three goals and three assists in European competition.

Gakpo’s most impressive feature is how unstoppable his shots appear to be. When he strikes the ball, he appears to land it either exactly into the corner where he wants it or with far too much strength for the goalkeeper to stop.

Only Erling Haaland has the same goal contribution rate as the Dutchman, and given the influence, the Norwegian has had at Manchester City, United might profit significantly from adding their own talisman who can play anywhere across the front line.

Many United supporters will be skeptical about Gakpo. A slew of Eredivise stars has failed to live up to their reputation and potential.

However, given how effectively Lisandro Martinez and Antony have adjusted to life in Manchester, with the latter scoring three goals in three Premier League games, this should not be cause for alarm.

The one disadvantage of any potential Gakpo transfer is that he will almost certainly cost much more than if United had signed him in the summer. The Netherlands has been playing well recently, and the 23-year-old has been crucial to their success, which is expected to continue into the World Cup.

Overall, United can only benefit from signing Gakpo in January because the club now lacks a regular goalscorer. In the long run, they might add one of the world’s most spectacular talents to their roster for the next few years.
