According to local rumors, the clubs have reached a verbal deal, and the Rio de Janeiro club will make it public next week, following the Super Cup on Sunday.

It appears that the signing has been called into doubt by more than just the media. Flamengo officials have also been lobbying for it not to happen.

According to Jorge Nicola’s report, there are “important people on the red and black board who are working behind the scenes,” therefore the deal has been called off. They’re attempting to persuade President Rodolfo Landim to abandon the signing.

Aside from his poor form, other reasons cited include Pereira’s age (he just turned 26) and the fact that his contract with Manchester United expires next year.

Flamengo has loaned the midfielder till the end of the season. The agreement included a €20 million buyout option, and even if the Rio de Janeiro club has now agreed to sign him for half that amount, it still appears to be too much.
