Unlike last summer, when United began the season horribly unprepared, Erik ten Hag has gotten his main summer targets in through the door before the season kicks off against Wolves on Monday. Mason Mount has improved the technical skill and dynamism in midfield, Andre Onana has taken over as the new No. 1, and Rasmus Hojlund has arrived as the long-awaited striker.

United are now concentrating on refining the roster by selling players who are not in the manager’s immediate plans. Ten Hag has expressed a desire for the team to be more brutal with its underperforming players. David de Gea, Phil Jones, and Axel Tuanzebe have all been released, while Anthony Elanga, Alex Telles, Zidane Iqbal, Charlie Savage, Ethan Laird, and Nathan Bishop have all already been sold, with several more prominent names expected to leave Manchester before the window shuts.

One of those is expected to be goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who believes he will return to Nottingham Forest after United’s signing of Onana. Forest are interested in a loan with an option to buy, but United would like the price before January so that they can meet the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability standards.

Despite the fact that Tom Heaton will be second choice, United may yet look for another goalkeeper to improve their alternatives following the sale of Bishop and the anticipated departures of Henderson and Matej Kovar. United attempted to sign Japanese teenager Zion Suzuki, but he declined. Last season, Martin Dubravka and Jack Butland were signed on loan, and a similar arrangement might be made this season.

In defense, Eric Bailly is a must-sell amid interest from Turkey and Saudi Arabia, Brandon Williams could leave, and Harry Maguire’s future is unknown. United aren’t actively after him, but the centre-back may be interested in a move due to his position in the pecking order and loss of the leadership this summer. It appears that a trade would benefit all sides, and United could replace him for free by acquiring veteran Jonny Evans for the season, boosting their budget.

United consider any other additions this summer to be a bonus and are dependent on any additional large business sales. They are still interested in signing feisty midfielder Sofyan Ambrat, and their chances of doing so could improve if Donny van de Beek and Fred go.

United are in talks with Real Sociedad about signing the Dutchman on a permanent basis, while Fulham are still keen in signing Fred as he enters the final year of his contract. West Ham are rumoured to be interested in Scott McTominay, but Kobbie Mainoo’s injury may prevent him from leaving. Hannibal Mejbri has impressed during preseason and could earn a position on the team.
