The Moroccan international-born in Canada has been one of the finest keepers in La Liga this season, competing with Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois for the title of the goalkeeper of the season.

United has been keeping an eye on Bounou for several months and is said to have asked to be kept up to date on his status at his current club. Bounou, 29, has two years left on his contract with Sevilla, which expires at the conclusion of this season, and it will cost roughly £25 million to activate the release clause in that contract.

Sevilla’s board of directors is aware of the interest in their goalkeeper and is eager to extend his contract for another two years. Any new deal would include a release clause of roughly £63 million. Atletico Madrid are also interested in signing the goalkeeper, as are a number of Serie A clubs.

United is the top choice. David de Gea has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Old Trafford, which may encourage United to cash in on him and bring in a new goalkeeper depending on who is appointed manager in the summer. Despite the fact that De Gea recently stated that he is very pleased in Manchester and hinted that he would be open to signing a new contract with the Red Devils.

He stated: “I admire the fact that I was born in Madrid, but it’s simply a city at the end of the day. Now I feel like I’m from Manchester; I just feel like any other Manchester resident. Your home is where you are loved and welcomed. I’ve been here for many years, and while anything can happen in life, especially in sports, I honestly don’t see myself leaving Manchester United.”

Meanwhile, Spain coach Luis Enrique has stated he left De Gea out of his latest Spain team because he is not entirely suited to their style of football. De Gea was notably omitted from Enrique’s 23-man team announced for forthcoming international friendlies against Albania and Iceland during the international break.

Enrique picked three goalkeepers in his squad, and instead of De Gea, he gave Brentford’s David Raya his first call-up. The two remaining goalkeeping positions in Enrique’s team have been filled by Spain’s first choice, Unai Simon, and Brighton’s Robert Sanchez. “It’s part of the tracing we do with goalkeepers,” Enrique explained of Raya’s initial call-up.

“He is a really successful player. I’m particularly interested in seeing it in the context of the selection. He has the requisite characteristics to join us in our game.” De Gea has been one of the Red Devils’ top players this season, but with no appearances for Spain since October 2020, his place at the World Cup in Qatar later this year is in doubt.
