Man United have reached an agreement in principle with Juventus to sign Adrien Rabiot, bolstering their midfield options.

Manchester United and Juventus have agreed on a deal in principle for midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United, who were defeated 2-1 by Brighton on Sunday, have reached a deal with Juventus to bring the France international to the club, but must now negotiate personal terms. In order to consummate the sale, the Reds must now reach an agreement with Rabiot’s representative, who also happens to be his mother.

Negotiations with his mother, Veronique, are claimed to be the “sole stumbling block” in the club’s attempt to close the transaction, as the club must offer him appropriate personal terms. The 28-year-old is considered one of Juventus’ highest-paid players.

United are anxious to improve their midfield before the transfer window closes at the beginning of next month, and they have long been trying to close a deal for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong. However, considering the length of the saga, United has admitted that they must consider alternate targets.

Rabiot, who is regarded as a defensive midfielder, will undoubtedly improve on United’s present midfield options, which drew harsh criticism after the defeat to Brighton. But, if United completes the signing of the Frenchman, how will they line up? MEN Sport has looked at three different solutions.

United, for the most part, plays in a 4-3-3 formation, though it can switch to a 4-2-3-1 at times (more on that later), which means Rabiot would slide directly into a midfield three and be United’s deepest player, shouldering defensive responsibilities.

Although Rabiot is not a pure defensive midfielder who jumps into tackles and leaves his mark, he is capable of playing in front of the back four and providing a protective screen. United can employ either Fred or Scott McTominay beside him if they wish to take a more defensive stance.

However, if they want to be a little more expansive, especially in games which they are anticipated to control and win, Christian Eriksen might play alongside him, functioning as the guy in the middle between the No.6 and No.10 positions. Bruno Fernandes would remain in the latter position.
