According to rumors, Manchester United has ruled out a swap deal with Atletico Madrid including Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezmann.

Ronaldo has expressed an interest in leaving United this summer to join a club competing in the Champions League.

However, the 37-year-old has so far failed to pique the curiosity of the few clubs who could afford his salaries, with Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid all ruling out a move.

Atletico Madrid has also been approached by Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, but has declined due to the hefty cost of the transaction.

‘I’m not sure who made up this idea regarding Cristiano Ronaldo and Atletico Madrid. It’s obviously not true,’ declared Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo this week.

‘It’s nearly hard for him to visit Atletico Madrid.’

According to The Athletic, United is aware that Griezmann has been made available by Atletico Madrid this summer, but buying the France international has been ‘dismissed.’

Griezmann came close to joining United in 2017, but the 31-year-old ended up staying with Atletico Madrid for two more seasons before joining Barcelona in 2019.

In order to finance a move for Ronaldo this summer, Atletico would need to transfer Griezmann.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo returned to exercise with United this week after missing the most of preseason due to family obligations in Portugal.

The 37-year-old arrived at Carrington with his agent, Jorge Mendes, who has been attempting to negotiate his release.

Erik ten Hag has stated unequivocally that he wants to keep Ronaldo in his squad, while United has made no hint that they are willing to allow the Portugal international to leave Old Trafford.
