Manchester United has been calling Louis van Gaal, prompting speculation that they want permission from their former manager to speak with Cody Gakpo.

Van Gaal, 71, abandoned his phone in a hotel toilet in Doha while plotting Holland’s World Cup strategy. A Dutch journalist discovered it when he hit the power button to see who had misplaced it and was met with a screenshot of Van Gaal and his wife Truus. There were also two missed calls, both with the caller ID ‘Manchester United.’

The phone was promptly returned to Holland’s manager, who was not pleased that it had been discovered by De Telegraaf’s highly respected football writer Valentijn Driessen.

According to reports in the Netherlands, United want to increase their interest in Gakpo after withdrawing an offer for the PSV Eindhoven captain last summer when Erik ten Hag pushed them to spend £82.5 million on Ajax winger Antony.

Old Trafford representatives are unlikely to be granted permission to speak with the 23-year-old while Holland prepares to face Argentina in the quarter-finals.

PSV rated Gakpo at £40 million after he came close to joining Leeds before United pulled out of negotiations. However, the Dutch club will be aiming for much more after Gakpo made his World Cup debut by scoring against Ecuador, Senegal, and Qatar in the group stages.

Earlier this week, the footballer revealed that while United had not made any formal contact with him, he would be interested if they did.

“I thought of Manchester United,” he told the Dutch newspaper NRC, “but when that didn’t materialize, I couldn’t remember.” And I began to have reservations. Leeds United did show up. Should I visit there? Now I’m waiting for everything. I have yet to hear from Manchester United. I’ll think about it when they arrive. In these judgments, I also seek God’s guidance.”

Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious exit last month, Ten Hag has already conceded that his team requires additional reinforcements in striking areas. He warned last month that attaining a Champions League comeback would be tough without more options going forward.

“On the front line, the availability of the players is an issue for us,” he remarked. We had to play a few more games where we had to improvise in order to build a proper offensive line. If you can’t do that, it’s really difficult to get into the top four if you don’t have the players to put up a competent offensive line.”
