Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has stated that Edinson Cavani will be unavailable for Wednesday’s Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.

The Uruguayan has recently suffered from a groin issue. Rangnick has announced that he has yet to return to team training and will not be traveling with the club.

“Edi will not make the trip – he didn’t train, and he hasn’t been training for the last couple of weeks,” he told the Manchester Evening News.

“He will not be a member of the group.” His groin is bothering him. Pushing him makes no sense as long as he doesn’t feel entirely capable of sprinting.”

In our opinion:

Cavani has had a number of niggles since arriving at Old Trafford, and it appears he will be sidelined for some time.

While the Uruguayan is not a likely start-up front, Rangnick has used him alongside Cristiano Ronaldo on occasion.

When needed, the 35-year-old has added a distinct dimension to United’s attack, but he will not play against Atletico tomorrow.

With his excellent record against Diego Simeone’s side, Ronaldo will lead the line. From 35 games, the Portuguese star has 25 goals and nine assists.

Rangnick, on the other hand, may want to proceed with care with the 37-year-old. With Cavani out of the picture, Marcus Rashford could see more playing time as a striker if Ronaldo is substituted at some point.

With the emergence of Anthony Elanga, Rashford has recently struggled to secure a starting spot.

On Sunday, he came off the bench to score against Leeds United and might start on the right-wing.
