Ahmed Elmohamady, a former Egypt international, has requested Manchester United to remove Harry Maguire’s captaincy from his former Hull City teammate.

Maguire, 29, has struggled for form this season and had a bad night on Saturday when he scored a disastrous own goal in a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur. The captaincy problem has been addressed at Old Trafford throughout the season, with several analysts urging Maguire be fired.

Elmohamady, a former Hull teammate, has now weighed in on the controversy, explaining why he believes Maguire should not be kept as United captain.

“Harry was with me at Hull City, and in my opinion, he doesn’t have the level to be the captain of Manchester United,” he told beIN Sports. “Manchester United require a player with a big personality, and if Ronaldo stays, I hope the next manager will give him the captaincy.”

“Ronaldo is capable of handling the strain and responsibility. Maguire, on the other hand, isn’t up to the challenge.

“I believe that the strain he is under as a result of wearing the captain’s armband is having an impact on his performance.” Maguire had a great season with Leicester City, a Premier League team that competes for a spot in the top six, and this may be his level. He lacks the necessary skill set to play for England’s most illustrious club.”
