In a surprising turn of events, Manchester United chose not to heed the clear warning provided by coaching assistant Benni McCarthy during the summer transfer window.

The decision that specifically drew McCarthy’s concern was the departure of David de Gea from the club, and the coach had previously expressed his strong disapproval.

De Gea’s illustrious 12-year tenure at Manchester United came to an end in July, culminating in his departure. With 545 appearances in various competitions, he was a stalwart for the team.

Despite the club’s efforts to secure a new contract for the Spanish goalkeeper, they ultimately failed to reach a final agreement.

The controversy surrounding De Gea’s exit escalated when reports from The Athletic suggested that he had accepted a new contract with significantly reduced terms.

However, Manchester United chose not to proceed with the signed contract and instead presented an alternate proposal with an even lower salary.

In response, De Gea opted not to accept the latest offer and subsequently became a free agent. Manchester United swiftly moved to sign Andre Onana as their new No. 1 goalkeeper.

Notably, Benni McCarthy had expressed his views on De Gea’s situation six weeks prior to his departure. McCarthy, who joined as a first-team coach in July, primarily focused on the attackers but also monitored the overall squad.

During an interview on South African radio station 947 Joburg, he emphatically stated that Manchester United should not allow De Gea to leave.

McCarthy’s remarks in June underscored his admiration for De Gea’s performance in the league, citing his 17 clean sheets and consistent excellence.

He emphasized that De Gea was among the best goalkeepers he had ever witnessed and worked with. McCarthy’s daily interactions with the goalkeeper provided him with unique insights and reinforced his belief that De Gea was irreplaceable for the club.

Despite McCarthy’s passionate plea, Manchester United proceeded with De Gea’s departure, and the experienced goalkeeper is still in search of a new club.

With Andre Onana facing challenges in adapting to the Premier League, questions may arise regarding the wisdom of parting ways with the long-serving Spaniard.

This episode serves as a stark reminder that sometimes valuable advice can be overlooked, potentially leading to unforeseen consequences.
