The Gunners are very thin on the ground in midfield. Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga are the only natural midfielders Arteta has at his disposal at the moment, which is not enough if they are to really challenge for the title this season.

Mikel Arteta and Edu are likely to sign a new midfielder in January, and Danilo could be the man for the job.

Arsenal tried to sign Danilo for £21m on deadline day of the summer transfer window.

Last summer, Arsenal were looking for a new defensive midfielder after Mohamed Elneny’s long-term injury was confirmed.

Arteta and Edu did everything they could to bring in Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa, but when they realised that signing was not possible, they turned to young Danilo.

One of the 21-year-old’s representatives told Yahoo Sport this week: “On deadline day in England, Arsenal went to Palmeiras and said they would pay €25m (£21m).

Another source close to Danilo told the media outlet: “He is the first name for the job among the top European clubs.

The media outlet also reports that Palmeiras are not even considering selling him in January for less than £26m. That makes him very affordable for the Gunners, and it would not be surprising to see Arteta and Edu make a move to sign him.
